Ah, what a day. It was possibly the last time that Ferris, Ben and I will be walking together before the main event, so we thought we’d challenge ourselves by doing a night walk and also ramping up the distance quite considerably.
The plan was to go from Petersfield station, meet the Trailwalker route after about 6km and follow through checkpoints 1 to 7, then break off down the hill to Hassocks train station. That would have come to 80km, so we started at 12:30 with the aim of reaching the station for the 06:30 train to London. Alas, it was not to be…

Sunrise - 6am. I was determined to set off with an early start.
With this being my first solo trek - i decided on a far easier route than my previous one. It was a little touch and go with the weather to begin with - but as i arrived in Brighton the sun was shining and all was well.

So this was a slight let down. I thought it was 26 miles, 40km or thereabouts, so we were proper excited when we breezed through at pace, but once we’d stopped and had a pint and a think, we realised we must have got the distance wrong. Turned out it was a 35k, so we weren’t quite as quick as we thought. Still, for a dismal, rainy day it was a good walk - reasonable distance and plenty of speed. Now for a truly massive walk next week to see if we can hack it!

The second team walk in the Brecons, and it was a good ‘un. After a big day on the hills on Saturday and with the threat of driving home looming large, we decided to go for a short ’sightseeing’-type walk. We chose to head for Ystradfellte to take in a few of the waterfalls. It was a superb, sunny day and it was an absolute stunner. Wel worth a look if you’re ever around there.

Ah, the Welsh hills! What a lovely walk this was - seven of the twelve walkers all walking together, hitting some 2000 ft peaks, enjoying the scenery and making the most of the mostly-good weather. Fantastic.

The entire members of Ramblomatic Extras set out on a drizzly Saturday morning to tackle part of the course. We covered Checkpoint 7 to Brighton Train station covering 20 miles in just over 7 hours.
The day started off overcast as the walk began in Devil’s Dyke. The team kept good pace and enjoyed the countryside views. The weather improved and just past Lewes, where we had a spot of lunch being overlooked by some interested lambs.

Well earned break by check point 8
There is a fairly steep hill just out of Brighton in which has be renamed by as “Evil Hill”. As I can imagine after walking for 25 hours it will be a challange. On route we met another team practicing for the event only to find out they had gone from Washington and seemed very speedy and not worn out at all. We continued on our way up toward the race course only to be beeped at by the team we met earlier. Oh well we still have some training to do to get that good. Enjoyed a well deserved drink at the pub across the road from the race course and did our final few kilometres down to Brighton train station.

What a fantastic day for a walk! Sunny, warm and glorious, with a lovely riverside walk from Marlow to Reading. Only 18 miles, but we made good time, covering the full distance in just 6 hours including a short stop in the Angel on the Bridge in Henley for a half-way pint.

What a bloody disaster. The plan was to walk from Rainham to Whitstable along the coast. It’s about 17 miles by road, so I assumed it would be about 20 miles by path and when I saw a proper named trail running the route, I thought it would be easy and pleasant to just use that trail. A day of mistakes, to be sure.

There’s only one way to know what you’ve got to do. And that’s to do it. Only a fraction of Ramblomatic could make it, but nevertheless, Ben, Ian and Olly set off to start from Hassocks Station to Brighton Station. With only a bad sense of direction from Ben and a map from Olly, they set off to reinact the hardest section of the Trailwalker.
Route: Hassocks to Brighton (CP8 to CP11)
Walkers: Ben, Ian & Olly
Date: 28/02/08
Distance: 30km/18.4 miles (approx.)
Time: 6h 23m
Average speed: 4.7kmph/2.9mph
